Spray tanning at Beauté Tunbridge Wells

We've developed a guide to spray tanning at Beauté Tunbridge Wells, just one of a number of professional services we offer at our salon (see main site). Spray tanning has fast become an extremely popular method of getting an instant tanned appearance without the risks associated with U.V rays found in the sun and sun beds. Spray tanning is great for so many occasions, here are a few:-

So how does spray tanning work?

At Beauté we use two different sun spray solutions – Tiamo and Naturasun which cover a range of colours to suit very fair to darker more olive skin tones.

They both contain the same active ingredient – DHA which is a colourless derivative of sugar cane. DHA reacts with your superficial layer of skin to form a natural looking tan. The skin begins to darken 2 to 3 hours after application and reaches its optimum colour within 24 hours.

Spray Tanning is a 30 minute treatment and involves wearing a pair of disposable pants, a protective headband and a barrier cream on the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. You are then escorted to the shower area where your Beauty Therapist will spray you from head to toe with your chosen colour. Back in the treatment room you will be provided with a drink and some magazines while you stand and “dry” for about 10 minutes before dressing. The tan will develop to its’ optimum colour over the next 24 hours and will last from 5 to 10 days.

Spray tanning Do's and Don'ts

Do exfoliate, shave or wax and moisturize the day before your application NOT on the day.

Do wear loose, dark clothing. The colour guide may rub off onto fabrics but will wash out however it may stain nylon and lycra.

Do remove make-up, moisturiser, perfume and deodorant before your application.

Don't wear soft contact lenses during your session.

Don't have a spray tan if you are pregnant or breast-feeding (as a precaution).

Don't tint eyebrows or eyelashes within 12 hours of a treatment.

The first step to a beautiful long-lasting tan is preparation. Use a non-oily body scrub to gently remove any impurities and smooth the skin prior to your spray tan application.

After your spray tan

Leave your tan on for at least 12 hours, and overnight if possible, before showering or taking a bath. This gives your tan a chance to develop fully.

Avoid strenuous exercise, as sweating can inhibit the development of your tan. It is advised that you wait at least 5 hours before doing anything that may make you perspire.

Avoid wearing socks or shoes after your tanning session, as again sweating can inhibit the development of your tan. Wear flip flops or loose fitting shoes.

Avoid applying moisturiser or deodorants for at least 5 hours

Avoid wearing tight clothing for at least 5 hours.

Don't sit on light coloured leather or fabrics until you’ve showered or taken a bath as the colour guide can cause discolouration.

Don't shave or wax until 12 hours after your treatment.

Maintaining your tan

Healthy skin tans best! The secret to maintaining your tan is to moisturise daily, hydrated skin is essential in maintaining a longer lasting colour however lotions containing Alpha Hydroxy Acids (A.H.A’s) are used to increase exfoliation, therefore their use will accelerate the fading of your tan.

Avoid long hot baths and showers as they speed up exfoliation. Pat your skin dry after a bath or shower. Rubbing your skin may rub off your tan.

Avoid swimming pools as the chlorine can bleach your tan.

For a really dark and lasting tan have a double exposure treatment. Book a second top up within 48 hours of your first appointment.
